Chapter 18
An engine was close, the motor revving, slowing, then revving again. Light streamed through a window or something, because it was too bright.
Sarah opened her eyes, then snapped awake, shielding her face with a hand. She was outside, lying in the grass.
It all came back to her in a flash, the morning sun warming her chilled skin.
A groundskeeper for the golf course was roving back and forth on the green of one of the holes, the flag stick on the ground at the fringe.
She scanned the area. Empty except for the one groundskeeper.
When she sat up, she rubbed her neck, the muscles stiff from an awkward four or five hours scrunched up on the hard surface.
The groundskeeper jumped off his machine, stuck the flagstick back in the hole, then got back on and rode toward the next green, without looking in her direction.
She stretched, arms high, grunted and tried to stand, all of her muscles feeling stiff.
From where she had nestled in for the remainder of the night, she could see Kipling Avenue. Not a single car drove by this early on a Sunday morning. It had to be slightly after six, perhaps going on seven.
What else had happened last night? She wished she could get an update on everyone. Where was Aaron, Parkman? How was Alex, Benjamin, Daniel?
Sarah got to her feet, stretched again, brushed grass off her clothes, and headed toward the street.
She needed a bathroom, a coffee, and some time to think. Darwin would be there within twelve hours. He was already in the air. Disco would be with them, too. Even Ricigliano could be counted on. Sarah just needed to stay off the street and hidden for the rest of the day, then find a way to get to the airport for five or six that night. Then, with Darwin’s help—because Vivian was hardly around—they’d find a way to figure out what was going on.
But first she would need to check in with Ricigliano. Vivian told her about a cop who would murder someone, which was not much to go on. But Vivian also told her the name, Thomas Clark. Who the hell was that? Maybe before meeting Darwin, Ricigliano could look up that name. The one thing Vivian said about the leader of the kidnapping crew getting away and how Sarah had to let it go didn’t sit well with her. That was something she’d have to decide in that moment.
At the street, she withdrew the cell phone, hit the power button, then trudged south on Kipling.
The phone dinged as it connected to the cell network. Two more dings, then a voicemail icon lit up.
Someone had texted the cell.
She opened the text option. It was Ricigliano. Sarah hadn’t blocked the number, so of course the homicide detective would text her if she couldn’t reach her, which was evidently something she had tried countless times throughout the night based on all the voicemails.
Sarah opened the text.
Is this the man with the gray streak in his
